AITA for calling 911 on some loose chickens?

Hi Reddit! So I know the title makes it sound bad but, I promise this was with the best of intentions.

I (31F) live in a small town at the end of Long Island with lots of farms surrounding it. The town itself is very residential, with some larger main roads leading to a highway. I've only lived here a little less than two years, and I'm still getting acclimated with the community. Today, I was leaving my job to stop by the post office when I spotted three chickens hiding under a truck beside a busy road. It's been cold and raining since last night, and they looked a bit lost, so my first instinct was to worry for their safety. I pulled over my car to check on them and went to the house next door to see if maybe they were their chickens that had gotten loose. I knocked, and this very nice guy answered. He said they were not his, and he advised me to call 911.

So I called and explained that I spotted these chickens, and was hesitant to leave them in case they got hurt crossing the road. The dispatcher chuckled, agreeing that the situation was a little odd, and sent someone from Animal Control to come over. I said great, hung up, and stood with these cuties for about 20 minutes in the rain until someone came.

In the meantime, I decided that posting on NextDoor would be helpful in case someone was panicking about their lost chickens and decided to check the app. I wrote that I found them, provided the cross street, and said I'd be hanging out with them until the 911 dispatcher sent someone to help me find their owners.

The Animal Control officer arrived, I thanked them for coming and explained that I saw these three ladies near the road and wanted to make sure they were okay. The officer then told me, "They're free-range chickens." I stopped for a second and asked what she meant, only because the only mental image I've ever had of free-range chickens is on a farm with acres of land and no fence. She said that in this area, people raise chickens, sort of like cats. They leave their homes to graze and walk about until they're ready to come home. I mentioned to her that a couple of weeks before, I had seen a chicken that was run over in front of my house that had escaped and was nervous about these hens having the same fate. She reassured me that this was normal and that, eventually, they'd go home. I said thank you for coming and letting me know all of that, I got back in my car and drove away.

A few minutes later, I got responses on my NextDoor post essentially saying "...you called 911 on some chickens?" I felt silly and because this is a small area, I didn't want the post to identify me in the community as "that lady that called the cops on chickens" so in a knee-jerk reaction I erased it.

I guess my question is, is this normal? Do people really let their chickens wander around freely near busy roads? And AITA for wasting emergency responders' time even though I thought I was helping? I don't think I'm an a-hole but I feel a little like one.
