What is a good Laptop for an Accounting Student?

Hello Reddit,

I am currently a HS Graduate that already has enough credits to jump to a Junior year at a college. I am majoring in Accounting and I have had experience on some Internship and college to see what other peers and workers are using daily for their work. I am deciding to invest in a laptop for school and don’t know which path to take.

On one hand, I understand the reliability that MacBook Pros/Airs have. The long lasting battery life and the M2 chips look very promising. Lots of college students use a MacBook to get their work done as I have noticed. There are the Microsoft Office apps available on the MacBook, and from my testing it seems like they can run well, but of course, that isn’t on a Mac with some good milage. I am somewhat of an Apple fan boy as well.

On the other hand, I see that in the internships that I have worked for they always use Microsoft software (10 or 11). The Thinkpads are very popular for these companies. And Microsoft is seen as the professional software used for many industries as well.

What are some things that concern me are:

  • Battery life is important for me so that I don’t have to stay plugged to get work done.
  • The lack of regular USB ports in the MacBook scares me that I would have to lend into their products and get adapters for other things.
  • Can a MacBook run Accounting programs as well as other Laptops?
  • Will it in general just be better to go the route that looks more professional (Microsoft) than the one that is more “trendy” and “new” (Apple)

I would like some good advice fellow Redditors, I don’t want to regret making an investment if I find out it wasn’t good choice later on. Thanks
