To paint, or to stain?

I've got this big, orange wood stand and two matching orange wood shelves that just don't match anything in my living space. The easiest route would be to paint everything black to match my black tv stand, but a classier (and more time consuming route) would be to sand everything and stain it dark to match my kitchen cabinets. What do you think I should do?
