Anyone else have younger cousins who weren't taught prpoer Asian manners, so you don't relate to them (they just seem like White kids) and maybe kind of resent them?
I have some younger cousins (they're now adults) and holy moly, I was shocked when I found out how they talk back, both when they were kids and as adults. Like I mean they talk back (to elders in general) in ways I wouldn't have been allowed to, and they do it almost constantly whenever they're talking.
My cousin legit had a house party (with weed and alcohol. Weed is illegal here and alcohol is against their religion. And bear in mind her 15yo sister was home) while her mom was out of the house, during lockdown. To make it worse, her mom was out because her own mom was dying of cancer and she was caring for her. So my cousin took her grandma's cancer as an opportunity to have a party, during lockdown (so it was illegal). Their neighbour rang the police, so she got caught. My uncle (her hdad) told me about it and thought it was funny. I know almost for a fact I'd have been thrown out for the same, since I was thrown out overnight for way less than that.
Legit, her and her sister had more freedom at 13-14 than I did at 21, with them not even fighting for it. No joke. I'm talking being allowed to choose clothes, having a bank account, going to the mall with friends (try being allowed out never, or best case scenario 4 times a year), taken to the doctor for similar health problems that I had. And as mentioned, just generally talking back. Like, fuck me - my cousin even is allowed to date and talks to her parents about things like that. Unfathomable to me. Her dad knows she posts fuckloads of Tiktok selfies, often in outfits that would not have flown in my household. Worst thing is they don't know how lucky they are (I'm not the type to bring it up, don't want to make them feel bad - but at the same time, don't want them to act like spoilt brats who think they're better than people who had to fight way harder for everything, not realising their own privilege).
It's not just the lack of strictness that's not relatable, but their entire values. Like they've grown up being proud of getting Bs or Cs in school and not really having a sense of humility (tiktok selfies, being shameless about getting a B as if it's a good grade). Pretty much like White kids. If they were White I wouldn't care, but it feels pretty wrong when they're not, plus them actually being related to me (and them being my closest relatives besides my parents, geographically and biologically). I'm supposed to just ignore this, like it's not weird asf to have your own relatives be so culturally different and to be pampered up. It's made even worse by my uncle (their dad) repeatedly demanding I end NC with my own dad and stop being bothered about how I was raised, when he's a hypocrite who doesn't even raise his own kids even close to that same way.
