How do young people who don't know each other refer to one another in Russia? «Вы» or «ты» ?

I was born in Russia but grew up in the US. I'm fluent, but since I only have my family and a couple friends to speak Russian to, I feel like I'm missing a lot of the social/cultural context for language that I have in English.

I've always been curious as to which 2nd person pronoun young people, when meeting someone within, say, 5 years of themselves in age would use. Would they say «как вас зовут» or «как тебя зовут» ?

My parents, who are in their 60s, pretty much exclusively use «вы» with strangers. Is it the same with younger people or do they have a different outlook on it?
