Americans is there a noticeable difference in the quality of generic brand grocery store items compared to name-brand ones?

I haven't grocery shopped in the past few years but saw WSJ journal article on grocery items and the differences between generics, private-label & name-brand products.

I was wondering if there's actually a noticeable difference in taste between buying a store-label like Great Value vs brand-name items?
