My Son won’t read at school (ADHD)
Hello, my son (7) is in first grade and won't read at school. The teacher that was assigned to his class retired early after being out for medical issues for a while and he has a new teacher now. I just learned that he has been sitting through group instruction and waiting for her to read to him.
At home when he has worksheets that he has to read we do have to fight him on it at first. However, when we tell him we will take something away or won't let him have dessert etc. He can and does read.
His teacher isn't really allowed to take anything away from him like recess or make him do time outs because of school policy. Honestly, she seemed shocked that he could read the worksheets at home.
How do I navigate this? We have an IEP meeting next month but I don't really know what to ask for. He is super capable but just won't participate unless he has consequences. At his age I feel like delayed consequences don't always work either.
Update- Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment. I received some very helpful responses. I will be asking the teacher to set timers for him and asking if she would be willing to give him small treats as motivation (of course I’ll provide those). As for the IEP I am going to ask for an aid to make sure he stays on track and possibly a quiet room to do his work so he isn’t distracted by his friends. I will also be getting a second opinion from a different psychologist on the Autism diagnosis.
To the people that want to imply that I’m harming my child for being defensive, please understand that if a parent is reaching out for help the last thing you want to do is start throwing insults at them. I adore the teachers I’ve had in the past and have enormous respect for the profession overall.
