Thoughts on photographers at gigs?

I am wondering a DJs perspective on photographers at their set. Are photographers distracting to the DJ and audience, or desired for publicity of younger artists wanted to get more media coverage?

I am new to photographing in this setting and recently got artists approval to take my own photos at their Dj set with flash. However since this is a rare circumstance to be able to use flash, I want to know if I am naive to think I am doing something good for the artist and scene if I am actually just an annoyance to the entire scene.

What are your thoughts?
