Lighting ideas for hanging lights from loft rafters?

We’re renting this loft, and it is a bit dark inside when the sun isn’t out. Because we’re renting, we can’t have an electrician add anything permanent (I asked the landlord, she said eat dirt).

I figure I can run an extension cord up to the rafters and hang some string lights or something. Any ideas? Has anyone else done something similar?
