A honest opinion after completing
TO set some context, DA:V is the first game in a long time that made me immediately start a new playthrough after my first because I found it damn addictive and wanted to try out different build and romance. And I've now completed it twice with about 200 hrs on the clock and have a Platinum trophy. Just to also clarify, I've played all DA games starting with Origins.
And then today I resumed Cyberpunk 2077 which is what was I playing before Veilguard released. And I couldn't help but realise just how vastly deep the writing and characters are and that you need to pay close attention to what the characters are saying and how the dialog choices matter. But I'm also finding it mentally straining due to the heavy thinking and emotional upheavels one needs to go through. Obviously it's not a fair comparison since it is with CD Project Red who are known to excel in this area, but I think Veilguard is probably fun because it is comparatively a little simplistic? The dialogs pretty much have the same rhythm ("oh we have problems, big problems and we need you to go take care of them!! And help me with my personal trauma while you're at it ! ") and while the game makes a big show of your choices making a difference they're mostly very minor consequences. It even took me two playthroughs to warm up to certain companions like Taash and Lucanis, who I found pretty drab and annoying initially.
I think all I'm trying to say is that DA:V is no doubt a fun game but the RPG elements take a backseat in favour of action and it is pretty evident that Bioware intended this for a fresh and younger audience to make new fans out of the series. And not for the people who are now 30+ years and stuck with this series from the beginning.
