The last name Epson

So I’ve seen “Epson” referred to as the humans’ surname here and there—usually by viewers from other countries, which seems to be the version of the show that it came from—and I’ve been curious about it. Does anyone know where it came from or if it’s true, and if so is there proof (screenshot, etc.)? And do you think it should be considered official for the original English version?
