As you can see, broadly speaking, the Valley Girls backdoor pilot is almost the same product that was originally presented to us: we still have this idea of ​​a young Lily breaking away from the privileges she has known all her life, and arriving at this new world that is the bohemian and charming underworld of California in 1983. The aesthetics of this show, of the costumes in this story, would still be very similar to what the directors originally had in mind, but I wanted to add a little detail to this version: that touch that was what originally made Gossip Girl so special; the idea of ​​being able to get into the intimate lives of the unattainable elite society of New York. I wanted to find a way to maintain this idea of ​​having two very different groups in this new story: one that represented Lily's new life in the bohemian California, but another that was a slight reminder of the glamour and elegance that the audience was used to with the original show; Keith Van der Woodsen would play that role in this story.

Actually, both Keith and Richard Rhodes would do it, because in my mind, they're both supposed to live among the highest social elite of Bel Air, which would be the elite neighborhood of this show, the place where we would have different events or parties (or scenes at Rick's house) that would balance this new aesthetic of this show with that old elegance that the audience would be used to.

The first season would revolve mostly around the sisters; they are our main duo here, our new Blair & Serena. We need that love-hate drama that has always characterized our protagonists in this universe (including Zoya and Julien). Their dynamic throughout the season would evolve to a better understanding of each other's situation, as Lily would understand Carol's reasons for wanting to be someone on her own without her mother's voice in her ear, and Carol would understand that Lily's life hasn't been as perfect as she always believed, as her little sister has also dealt with her own problems or pressures because of their parents.

Then there's Rufus and Alison. I'm really excited about the dynamic between the two of them in this story, especially Alison's. Alison is a character we barely got to know in the original show, but who clearly has a personal history with Lily that we never fully got to know. I think this show is the perfect opportunity to finally get to know her, and I love the idea that the dynamic between them started in a completely opposite place than we know it ended: with Alison being Lily's first real friend in California, besides her sister.

Schwartz said on several occasions that, in case the pilot was accepted into the second season of GG, his original intention was to bring teenage versions of several characters from The OC to this show as well, starting with Kirsten and Jimmy (𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘊).

Now, I have to be honest: I've never seen The OC, so I don't know who these people are. I only did a little research (𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴) on them, to get a general idea of ​​who they would be in Valley Girls, and how they could fit into the plot. Basically (𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘶𝘧𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘭𝘺'𝘴) they were both teenage sweethearts, before eventually breaking up and having marriages of their own, from which each had their respective children. She is the daughter of a prominent businessman, and he is the son of another equally well-off family. They both hail from Newport Beach (𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘢). I think there was a baby/abortion involved in their story, but I didn't look into it too much, though I guess something about that would be expected to be mentioned in VG.

Kirsten and Jimmy will not be main characters in the story of Valley Girls, but they will be recurring characters that will appear from time to time, expanding the development and the crossover between the stories of Gossip Girl with the characters of The OC a little more each time.

I'm aware that Keith is (supposed to be) Serena and Eric's uncle, not actually their father. The thing is, we never really got confirmation that Keith and William are brothers; in none of each other's appearances was the other's name ever mentioned. My theory is that Keith was originally meant to be Lily's future husband (𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘮 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘕𝘖𝘛 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘎𝘎 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵) and that for some reason, when he finally did appear, they simply changed his name.

The same goes for Carol in GG, who first appeared well after the second season, played by Sheila Kelley. In this version, I simply chose Jessica as her adult version because I consider her to be more similar to the teenage version presented by Krysten.

This prequel would exist in order to tell the full story about Rufus and Lily's past. I'm not saying that they would be the main focus (𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘐 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴), but it is true that R&L are the characters with the most canon material to tell; things like everything leading up to Scott's birth, and what happened after that.

I would love, though, if we could get more cameos from younger versions of GG's adults in this show down the road. We started with Dan, Serena, Jenny, and Eric's parents in S1, but I think it would be great if we could get at least one of Blair's relatives as a new recurring character at some point. I think he would really be perfect for the role.
