Modern Fabrics vs Historical Fabrics Theory Question/History Question
Hi all I recently asked a question about fabric choice in historical garments which sent me down a rabbit hole of looking at extant garments compared to modern costume remakes etc. I know that historical fabrics were often different than the ones we have today, but it got me thinking about fabric availability.
I see a lot of people today making garments (sometimes accidently, guilty of this) from quilting fabric which as we know gives things a very stiff vibe. Was quilting style fabric available in the past? It is often the cheapest natural fabrics at stores and I imagine historically some people would have opted to make their clothes from this cheaper material, so why wasn't I seeing any extant garment images with this thicker crinkly stiff cotton. I was looking at regency garments for reference but I assumed I would see at least some that were made of that material unless that didn't even exist back then (or was actually expensive or something?).
Just looking for if someone has any thoughts on this or on other natural fabrics we have today that were not available in the past, good or bad. On another note are high quality fabrics similar to the ones from history just not made anymore because of economics or are they actually unable to be made similar to the cashmere fiasco? Just wondering where all the stiff cotton regency gowns are in the extant garment list!
