News that Approximately ten individuals are feared deceased following a stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which occurred early Wednesday during Mauni Amavasya, a significant event marked by the ‘second Shahi Snan’.
The tragedy unfolded around 2 a.m. amidst dense crowds converging on the Triveni Sangam and additional ghats along a 12-kilometer stretch of riverbanks. Numerous injuries were reported, and several families were separated in the chaos, according to eyewitnesses.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, having discussed the incident thrice with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is actively overseeing the response efforts.
Both Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister JP Nadda have communicated with Adityanath, extending central government support.
Emergency services were promptly deployed, with ambulances transporting the injured to a nearby makeshift hospital. Authorities have urged devotees to clear the area post-bathing to prevent further incidents.
Despite the tragedy, Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad president Ravindra Puri announced that the monastic orders would proceed with the planned holy baths after the crowd lessened.
Misinformation contributing to the stampede was addressed by Puri, urging calm and caution among the attendees.
Chief Minister Adityanath has advised devotees to use closer ghats instead of heading towards the crowded Sangam Nose and to ignore rumors.
The state has implemented comprehensive crowd control measures to manage the influx of over 10 crore devotees expected to participate in the sacred bathing ritual, amplified by a rare celestial alignment called ‘Triveni Yog’ occurring after 144 years.
