Upset my car won’t be totaled. What to do?

So I was cut of by & rear ended a semi truck pretty good. For some weird reason my airbags didn’t deploy so my body shop is having a hard time getting the damage high enough to total. before I heard that I just assumed it would be totaled since it was a pretty bad crash so i already had my new car picked out lol. My question is do I now just have to wait until my car is fixed no matter what? What if I want to go ahead and get a new car even though mine is not totaled. Hopefully this question makes sense. ETA: thanks for all the information guys! Found out today they are going to total it so that solves my impatience! Lol
