Tcase/diff issues

Guys - ‘97 ZJ with a 4.0 and NP249. Binding around corners. I’ve taken the front shaft off tried to turn the yoke on the tcase for the front shaft and it doesn’t move - it tries to turn the rear prop output, fairly surely this is a failed VC which is fine.

A few weird things I’ve noticed/wanted some advice on:

  • With the car jacked up and all 4 wheels off the ground, if you turn one of the front wheels they turn in different directions as per open diff.
  • If I turn the rear wheels, both turn in the same direction, and if the tranny is in park then they won’t turn at all. Additionally, if I have one rear wheel touching the ground and turn the one off the ground, it forces the pinion to turn the prop - and again if it’s in park it won’t turn at all. Problem??
  • Given it’s a late 96+ NP249, am I okay to keep driving with the front shaft off, and should I be okay to tow with it off? Not ideal I know but I really don’t have the time to sort the VC yet and I really need tow stuff. It drives fine so far with front shaft off, no issues or binding.

Trying to understand what’s normal here and what’s not - differentials and 4x4 systems aren’t my strong point so any advice appreciated.
