Il Mare, ending

I just saw Il Mare yesterday and I was confused about the ending. Is it supposed to be a different timeline or did he actually get the letter? I honestly prefer it to be an alternate timeline otherwise it doesn't make sense and the movie is beautiful as a sad ending!
