HDMI eARC adapter into optical to enable volume control?

Has anyone found an HDMI eARC to optical adapter that enables volume control? I imagine volume control is disabled only by optical out, so if we output it via HDMI ARC then convert it to optical to the amp volume control should work. Has anyone tried this?
