Purpose of Romulus and Remus story?

In Alien Romulus, what was the overall purpose of the backstory about the two sister stations? I thought it would play into the story in some way, but in the end it felt irrelevant, and a bit like a wasted opportunity.

Just wondering if I missed something, or others felt the same? Is there some connection to the wider lore, for example?
