Modern needs a real tempo deck
First off let's acknowledge that yeah modern does kind of have a tempo deck in Dimir ... kind of. I'll explain why I disagree with that assessment.
Second I think modern right now is orders of magnitude better than it was before the bans. The fact that other decks are even worth playing is a huge improvement.
However, Modern needs an actual tempo deck, and it can't have that without Daze, Force, and Wasteland.
Counterspell is not an effective safety valve for the format anymore. Having to make the choice of tapping out on turn 2 and dying vs holding up UU while your opponent sculpts forever is not actually a choice. Having your tempo deck spend its turns holding up mana instead of making the opponent dead means you have a bad midrange deck, not a tempo deck.
Force and Daze ARE proper safety valves because they allow you to keep attacking your opponent so the can't sculpt forever. Wasteland helps keep them off of critical mana thresholds so they can't kill you. Putting combo under the gun early and often is a good thing for a format that has powerful combo decks. And I do think combo should exist. Combo decks are an important pillar of powerful formats. We should just have better tools to fight it.
And the free counter magic I mentioned? They don't make a format inherently a toxic mess where blue is easily the best color. In fair matchups in legacy, tempo decks often cut their Forces in post board games since the card disadvantage matters when you don't need to make sure you survive turn 1. Daze is also a lot worse in a format where you're picking up Steam Vents instead of Volcanic Island.
Also if we get Wasteland in the format then maybe it becomes a lot more reasonable for some the broken lands that exist in modern to keep existing.
Powerful Magic is a lot of fun. I just think everyone should get to play powerful Magic.
