How do I change armor style?

I don’t understand how to unlock the possibility to wear the regular sets you get from the blacksmith as layered armors. I only know that sone special armor appearances can be unlocked by doing events, but it seems you can do that also with the normal ones like xeno’jiva etc, am I right?
