Can I learn to understand music?

I'm 14 years old and I love music, but I'm mostly interested in the instrumental part of it, like production or mixing. That's because I can't understand music lyrics. I'm not talking about understanding it at a deeper level, it's just that it often sounds like gibberish. Most of the time I can pick up most words, but then there are few batches of words I just can't comprehend, especially in hip hop.

For example, in About a Girl by Nirvana Kurt Cobains singing sounds like complete gibberish. When I'm listening to an album for the first time I have to pull up the lyrics to understand what's going on.

Is this normal? Is there any way to get better at hearing lyrics??
