How do I join a band?

I'll clarify

Not to make a career of it or anything like that, just a simple pub band or similar that does small shows for the enjoyment of playing music?

I've always loved singing, but have always been paranoid about people hearing me. Recently some people have heard me and complimented me on it, and I've had the thought that maybe it would be fun to link up with some locals and just play some cover songs together.

The problem is, I have absolutely zero idea where to even start looking for something like that? Any tips, tricks, pitfalls to look out for would be appreciated!
