To start off, we don’t know what Aokiji did during the 2 Year Timeskip that caused him to side with Blackbeard but we can assume that after leaving the marines and traveling the world he has decided to go down his own path and whatever that may be is so influential that Oda placed him in the panel of individuals that will heavily affect the race for the One Piece.

Now people may ask WHY would he shown here? The answer is simple. Imu and his negative influence on the Marines as a whole. I believe Kuzan somehow has become aware of his presence and decided to act on this instead of being “Lazy” like his motto assumes.

His final act during the war? Kuzan will use his awakening to temporarily freeze the Mother Flame and weaken Imu at a critical moment. He will atone for all he has committed under the WG and under BB by making sure that the current regime falls and he will use any means to achieve this goal.
