When you call someone Sir/Ma’m and they get offended

I usually only do this when I’m interacting with clients at work but sometimes I’ll call someone sir/ma’m and they react like “woah I’m not old, what do you mean sir?”. Sir/ma’m is not for old people, it’s a verbal way to show to respect. Getting all offended by it is so weird to me.

Edit: the amount of people that are taking this completely not how I meant it at all or stating some time when it was used against them in a derogatory manner are just entirely missing the point of the post. My point was about people getting all weirdly defensive about perceiving that they were being called old. I don’t know what I expected from this but damn
