reMarkable 2 Not Charging - 'reMarkable is Starting' & 'Out of Battery' loop fix
Like quite a few people, I experienced the worrying issue of my RM2 not charging one day, and wouldn't charge no matter how long I left it on my Samsung fast charger.
This happened because I was been between jobs at the time and not using my RM2 for ages, as such the battery discharged enough to display the reMarkable is Out of Battery warning.
The fix is pretty simple, at least for most people where there isn't some other underlying issue.
To get it out of the boot loop of 'reMarkable is Starting' & 'Out of Battery' you'll need to plug the RM2 into a slow charger (something that's putting out 1A @ 5v) older gen phone chargers work, as do the HTC Vive controller chargers that are 1A.
Leaving it on a slow charger overnight, (I used original RM cable too) did the trick. Turned it on 9 hours later, booted properly, and was at 100% battery. I didn't have to do anything crazy, (although I did do a hard reset while I was trying other chargers out)
Hard Reset
- Press and hold power button for 10 seconds
- Release
- Press and hold power button for another 2 seconds
- Release
There seems to be an underlying issue with charging the RM2 off of fast chargers when its completely flat. Probably to do with the 'intelligent' way fast charging works. I've experienced some other devices that have this same issue.
So before you freak out like I initially did. Throw your RM2 on a slow charger overnight (most of us have one from an old phone) and give it a shot. If you've lost your slow charger, you can pick up chargers on eBay and places like that, or ask a friend or work colleague (especially the IT dept.), they likely have one laying around.
If it still doesn't come back, then it's probably time to contact reMarkable support.
