Is Far Post Rotation a Forgotten Skill?
Been playing the game on and off since release. Sometimes I go hard and play most days for months, sometimes I don’t touch the game for months. Former mid-high champ player, but last few seasons down in the high diamonds.
I feel like 95% of my 2s partners will rotate away from the play on the same side of the pitch as the ball, often times staying very close to the ball and having no momentum to make a play. This is very frustrating because I have no idea if you intend to attempt to make a challenge or if you intend to fully rotate away from the play and open me up to challenge. This makes me indecisive about whether or not I should be going for the ball, and makes me much slower and worse at the game.
Far post rotation means that you rotate back on the opposite side of the pitch that the play is happening on for two reasons.
It’s very clear that you are rotating away from the play, opening the door for me to challenge the ball knowing that I am no longer the last man back and will have your support should I be a little too slow or make a bad 50.
You have momentum to come back to the play at high speed if I make a good 50 or pass, rather than trying to awkwardly twist around with no room to build momentum into the play.
I feel like back in the day, many rocket league tutorials would praise far post rotation and push for players to learn it in order to achieve high ranks with mid tier car control (like I did). Nowadays I feel like nobody does it but on the off chance I do get a teammate who does it, we party up and win 6 in a row.
Edit for clarity: by no means do I think you should always be rotating out of the play. There is obviously nuance in every situation. What I’m trying to get at is that players seemingly don’t understand the concept or the benefits of rotating far post when it does come time to rotate. At some point you will have to rotate, and when you do rotate, rotate far post instead of crowding the play and causing an awkward situation.
