Worst Shift I’ve Ever Worked
Let me set the scene: It’s a normal Thursday morning shift except the Host called out, the Server called out and the 1 service assistant called out. It was just me, the bartender, and my Lead to run the whole shift. I was expected to be the Host, Bartender, Server, hand out takeout orders and be my own Expo, Runner, and Busser. (I know this is normal at some restaurants, but at mine we have a LOT of support usually and we are busy enough to need the extra staff).
On a normal morning shift it would have been okay, but on this day we got slammed right at noon. I had 12 tables at once AND 3 separate parties of bar guests at my bar. Right away I knew my service was going to be shitty, so I was telling each table that I was the only one on shift and I apologize in advance for the lack of service. Things were going somewhat okay until the beer line cleaning people came in to clean our beer lines (to this day I have no idea why they came in during our lunch rush). I let them do their thing and they told me to let them know if someone ordered a draft beer so they could turn on that tap for me. I go to greet a table and they order 3 draft beers, so I asked the line guys to turn on the Sapporo tap for me. They reattached the spout and went to turn on the tap while I was waiting to pour the beers. Well, they turned on the WRONG TAP and suddenly beer came shooting out of the un-spouted tap line. I got absolutely soaked in beer, like down to my undies soaked in beer (my manager later told me that this was called a bartenders baptism lol). I ran to the walk in to tell them that they turned on the wrong tap, and they both laughed at me. At this point I was so flustered and had other tables to greet so I made the decision that all draft beers were 86’d until they were done with the lines. When I told my table that we were unfortunately out of draft beer for the next hour or so and that I got soaked in beer they were extremely rude to me and ultimately made me start crying. I was trying to keep my cool but I was so overwhelmed and upset at the whole scenario that I literally cried for the next 2 hours of my shift while serving. It was bad. At one point Kitchen staff was helping run food to tables and two of my bar guests even came behind the bar to hug me and try to make me feel better because I was crying while making drinks.
Eventually another manager finally showed up to help me take tables and overall support me throughout the rest of the rush. Once everything had calmed down and I finally got my shit together the Lead manager came up to me and started making fun of me for crying, she even spread the story to the other servers and now everyone has labeled me “a baby” for crying throughout that shift. Am I in the right for being upset at them for belittling me? Or am I as they say, “a baby”?
IMO no one should ever have that many tables and responsibilities at once and my response was justified for the situation I was in. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
