Looking for games that offer “alternative playstyles”

So I’m looking for games that give you the opportunity to play normally, but then different ways to go around that and do something different. It’s a bit hard to explain in words, but I really love playing games in a different way that’s expected of me. I’ll give some examples:

  • playing as a shield operator in Rainbow Six Siege. It completely upends the skills regularly needed to play, and forces your opponents to switch from shooting to tactics to take you down. Not a fan of the game as a whole, but love this aspect.

  • playing as Shaco in League of Legends. Unlike most characters which reward skillful gameplay, trading, skirmishing, and so on, Shaco allows you to booby trap the map and turn unwinnable fights into walks in the park. Very fun way to play, in an otherwise dreadful game.

  • playing as an Assassin in an MMO like Ultima Online. Instead of grinding for gold or other usual tactics in MMOs to improve your character, you can stalk people, learn their routes, infiltrate guilds, and eventually pull off a heist or assassinate someone after they score amazing loot. VERY fun to do the research, and wait for the right moment. Most MMOs don’t really allow for this type of gameplay anymore.

  • playing through Dark Souls while level 1. This is a singleplayer example. The game is obviously built for you to level up as you play, and beating it while level 1 is very much possible. This leads to an enjoyable challenge of you figuring out the tools you have available to overcome a familiar but now more challenging game.

  • Unusual strategies in Dominions 6. The game allows you to choose a nation and design a God from scratch for it. This lets you theorycraft deep plans for an otherwise static nation- you might only normally have access to blood magic and fire magic but now your god can cast spells in glamour and nature paths. Really fun to discover new avenues and potential ways to change how you play.

  • stealth gameplay in general in Bethesda games. I know the mechanic was designed for the game, but playing as a thief and stealing everything and sneaking around everywhere changes the game from a regular RPG to a thief simulator. Very fun.

  • Taking multiple unstable genomes in Caves of Qud. This roguelike lets you build a mutant from scratch and basically expects you to be carried by your mutant powers early game. Unstable genome starts you as a regular schmuck, no powers, and you have to hope to get any as you level up. Makes the early game hellish, but making it through it feels like a real victory.

So yea, in some ways it feels like I’m looking for something that challenges me to think differently, maybe theorycraft a little, and find that special playstyle or pathway that makes the game feel different from normal.

I really appreciate any recommendations!
