The Show of a Lifetime

i've always been a believer that great art comes to you at the moment you need it most — so though i'd known of ted lasso's existence for a while; this was the time that i decided to watch the show. and it's already the best decision that i've made this year.

i'm a poet and a creator; someone accustomed to adoring what is unmistakably human at the heart of every song, every movie, every book, every painting, every TV show — but i've never felt as much light fall over me as when i started watching ted lasso. this is a series steeped in love — love for the characters it holds with so much warmth; even when they're at their worst. love for the bonds that sustain and break us at the same time — and how we balance the two without betraying our sense of who we are. love for people; in all their dizzying complexity — who are both soft and cruel; self-absorbed yet sacrificing: who are ever and always possible; bathed in potential — forever capable of growth.

each person in this show is crafted with so much care; so much attention to the tiniest detail. shows that are about everyday living can often go stale — but ted lasso remains fresh and ripe with promise from start to finish; because of the quality of attention that is put into its narrative. if you pay enough attention to anything — be it a person, a club, a football pitch — it becomes holy. it takes on a sacredness that only the best stories have. we tend to think of sanctity; of benediction as something remote; something lofty — but ted lasso is so brilliant in guiding us to the truth that grace is down here in the dirt and struggle of daily living. grace is the friend that takes your hand after a panic attack. grace is the person who has always hated you seeing you at your weakest moment; who then chooses to embrace you in all of your broken anyway.

grace is the ability to look life in the eye and not flinch away from it: no matter your divorce, your parental trauma, your inescapable anger. ultimately this is a show that is relentlessly curious — about what it means to be a human being, even when being a human can feel like your heart is twisting apart at the seams. especially then.

this is a show that goes toward existence with the purest interest; with humor, with infinite tenderness at the sheer implausibility of being on this earth and getting to experience a life.

ted lasso is a series that is curious about living; it keeps wonder burning even in the coldest of seasons — and to every single person who has watched this show: i hope you can always keep your sense of wonder alive. i hope you never stop being curious about the world and everything in it.

because i know ted won't. and neither will i. 🙏🏽💙
