Methanol discussion

Currently in Phi Phi and got speaking to a couple about the night life (it’s my first day and time in phi phi). They said although phi phi is good for nightlife, they absolutely refuse to drink any drinks like vodka coke / cocktails.. basically anything other than beer because apparently phi phi is known for spiking and dodgy alcohol?? Is this true??
