Looking for Clues...Episode 1...8m 40s

At 8m 40s into the first episode, Sam, or "Gene", is meeting with Dr. S for the first time. It cuts from a scene where Alan is trying to give Ezra Beth's guitar, at the post office where he works, and Ezra says he doesn't play anymore. Then it resumes Gene and Dr.S's meeting and Gene says...

"That’s it, cause you’d expect anybody to save their own ass, but he’d rather die than use her as his excuse, like uh, disgrace her."

to which Dr. S replies,"I think I have actually heard that one before.."

and Gene interrupts,"Right? It's a classic."

Am I grasping at straws or is this significant?
