Washing used mutes???

I recently bought two straight mutes off of eBay. One is a metal Tom Crown, and the other is a Humes + Berg made of fiber. I buy most of my trombone stuff used, and try to deep clean them. Is it ok to use water? Soap? What’s the best approach at cleaning them? I’m a young player, and these are my first mutes, so any insight will help. Thanks!
