Opinions of old vs new fuel/maintenance

so I'm considering getting a rig this year I've got half the people told me it new for the fuel economy the other half tells me get an older rig for reliability and maintenance costs. also I'm curious if I can still run Drive-In with some of these longer wheelbase pre-emission rigs
