Hey BetterAskReddit, what's your favorite "Messy Masterpiece"?
"Messy Masterpiece" is a term I've recently been introduced to and I'd like to hear what some others would consider their "Messy Masterpiece".
By that I mean what's a piece of media/art that while it excels in what it does right, is held back by either flawed, bad, poorly implemented, or even cringe material that just holds it back. But regardless of the flaws, you still enjoy it either way.
Two examples for me would be Fairy Tail and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Fairy Tail excels with character writing, themes, art, and other areas. But is held back by either Mashima not following through on certain plot threads or character moments, some power of friendship moments not feeling earned, and the horny stuff surrounding Lucy and Erza can get a bit much at times.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a fantastic combat system (once you figure it out for yourself), some great emotional moments, and a standout cast of characters, and works as a great sequel to the first game. But like I said, the tutorials are kind of a mess, some of the mechanics surrounding blades make new playthroughs a slog, blade gacha, and the outlandish character designs and rushed dub make a poor first impression for some players.
