Which british monarchs experienced the most stress and anxiety during their reign? Got the least enjoyment out of being king?
For me; Henry VI, Henry VII and Henry IV. Maybe not the most stressed, but I would put them high up.
🫅Henry VI: Having to be the king at the time when England lost the 100 years war. And having to see the country break it self apart in a civil war. A war that would kill his family, friends and in the end himself..
🫅Henry VII: was a ursurper, had a weak claim and had to fight pretenders. Was probably VERY stressed when his heir and wife died. Leaving him with only one son. And no york wife to get more. If his only son died, then everything he had built would be destroyed. So I dont think he got much enjoyment out of life after Arthur and his wife Elizabeth died.
🫅Henry IV: He shared the same problem as most ursuper had. That the moment people were displeast with your rule, they will rebel and call you an ursuper.
Henry IV rule was a shitshow. Lacked money Wales exploded, the Percys rebeled. And France and Scotland fueled this fire. And apart from all this, his health declined a lot. So he would be stressed over all the rebellions, the safety of his family. But also add on the stress of dying of an unknown illness. In a time when the king had to ride out to battle and defend their claim. The fear that he would no longer be able to protect his kingship and family, by being an invalid.
