RUMOR/UNCONFIRMED: On the USL Championship and League One Clubs Folding…

Hey y’all, so here’s what I’ve heard from people regarding Championship and League One clubs folding next season. All of this is unconfirmed and I am working to find more solid sources, so I would like to clarify that. If you know people within any of the clubs listed below who are willing to talk anonymously, please DM me.

Now first, on the Championship, the two teams first alluded to by John Morrissey of USL Tactics will likely not fold. It is much more likely that these teams will only go on hiatus until new ownership is found.

These two teams are North Carolina FC and San Antonio FC.

On North Carolina, it seems that Steve Malik is looking to sell the club, which would make sense with his separate sale of the North Carolina Courage. On San Antonio, it seems that the Spurs Sports & Entertainment group is looking to move on. Two ownership groups that both attempted MLS bids that failed seemingly don’t see much more room for growth in their investments. I will say from info I have now, it is much more likely that NCFC goes on hiatus in 2025 than SAFC. It is possible that neither do.

Believe it or not, but Miami FC is likely safe for at least the next year or two. Recently, they announced the addition of Sebastian Veron and Dario Sala to the club board. Veron and Sala are co-founders of Sports Performance Hub, a group behind an initiative to build a 10,000 seat soccer-specific stadium in Homestead, Florida. While Homestead is in Miami-Dade county, the proposed stadium site is just over 20 miles from Miami FC’s current home, Pitbull Stadium. To my knowledge Miami FC intends to move to this new stadium, and I’m waiting on some additional info that’ll reach me in November, which I’ll put in an article on Beyond the 90.

The USL League One team to fold is seemingly going to be the Northern Colorado Hailstorm. From the outside looking in, this… is pretty obvious. Rumors of the USL funding the team have run rampant, but even if that’s not true the current owners have run their home stadium, Future Legends Sports Complex, into the ground (filed for bankruptcy last week). New owners are not expected to come in due to the current ownership debt and the struggles of the Windsor market.

I will share more information when I can and when I get it. Once again, if you have any useful information to share, please DM me!
