Advice Needed on UoL BSc (Hons) Computer Science
I really need urgent advice. I was quite interested in the BSc (Hons) Computer Science program by the University of London, but the reviews have made me hesitant. Let me explain why I’m concerned.
I was a third-year student in a BSc (Hons) in Business Management and Information Systems at a Scottish university but had to leave halfway through in November 2023 due to a personal tragedy. I received an Undergraduate Diploma in Higher Education Science for the 240 credit hours I completed. 2024 was a mentally challenging year for me, but I’m now recovering and looking to resume my studies. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to return to my old university, which is why I’m exploring online undergraduate programs.
I really liked the Open University programs, but they’re too expensive for me. The University of London program is the only one I can afford. I emailed them on January 3rd, and on January 15th, they replied that I’d need to request RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) during the application process.
Here’s my concern: My previous undergraduate program included Computer Science subjects, but it wasn’t a great experience. The only reason the program was called “Information Systems” was because it had less math courses. The program was relatively new, and while the Intro to Programming course was good, the rest of the programming courses were poorly taught. Lectures consisted of reading through slides with minimal information, no textbooks were recommended, and self-learning was my only option. I remember struggling with assignments and exams, but with encouragement from my father and a lot of self-study, I managed to achieve mostly first-class grades and even scored 100% in two programming courses.
I’m okay with self-learning if that’s what the UoL program requires, but I’m worried about potential issues I’ve read about, such as poor support or system errors affecting grades.
My questions are:
Are issues like “system errors” that affect grades common? Is it realistic to aim for a first-class degree through this program? Do you think I should take my chances with UoL or consider alternative options?
My future target is to get into masters in AI in South Korea which is why I am still considering University of London over Open University.
I’d really appreciate any insights or advice. Thank you!
