Wayfinders (Updated)
Thank you to everyone who put in their comments and critiques from the last post! All the “Ginger bread Space Marine” and “Space Spoon” jokes had me dying laughing, I didn’t even realize it looked like that! I changed the look up and added some new lore from the different critiques I saw and I’m happy with the way it turned out! I went with a Koa wood design for the color from the Hawaiian islands and I changed the markings from the paddle to that of a Samoan style hook.
Many comments were made about adding Maori marking and such to the design, but as the art of tā moko is extremely sacred and many in the community don't like non-maori people wearing it, I thought it best to respect them and opt it out from the design. I am also a Samoan-Hawaiian so I feel as though I do not have a claim to use that tattoo style, even though they do fall under the Polynesian umbrella.
There was also a comment about heretical Wayfinders turning into "Night Marchers", which in Hawaiian lore is ghosts of dead Hawaiian soldiers that hunt throughout the night for people not of Hawaiian descent (Paraphrasing the legend ofc). I absolutly love this idea and will be making a chaos legion based on it!
Again I really appreciate it, I am new to this community and I’m thankful that you all were so welcoming, much Mahalo!
Updated lore: This chapter is called “The Wayfinders” as I took great inspiration from my own Polynesian heritage as well as the Carcharadons, which they are a successor chapter to. The name reflects in their chapter marking as it is the famous Polynesian style hook that wayfinders used to catch food. Their purpose as a naval based fleet is to travel in and out of the warp trying to chronicle all the places they explore for the imperium. They’re almost the complete opposite of their parent chapter as they are loud as hell and are much more like the space wolves in how they act, and tactically fight like the white scars. The one thing they do keep from the Carcharadons are the markings of their armor as it keeps them grounded to reality so to speak while within the warp, as well as being an intimidation tactic when in complete darkness as their markings glow, illuminating the area around them.
