Do you think Carrie Underwood's "Sound of Music" performance would be viewed as notoriously bad had it not been for Julie Andrews?
Don't get me wrong, she was pretty cringeworthily bad in The Sound of Music. That being said, I can't remember any other time a movie was released and a person's performance was criticized as heavily as hers was. The critics laid into her like nobody's business.
Had Julie Andrews not absolutely killed the part 50 years prior do you think Underwood would have gotten as much hate as she did though? I will say it wasn't a fair competition as Andrews had tons of previous acting experience, was in an edited version of the film (rather than live), and her beauty was beyond compare. Really the only part Carrie could realistically compete with her in was the singing part and I'd say both were very solid in that area. Julie was better I'd say but a lot of that probably just has to do that she had multiple takes and Carrie had one. Both have phenomenal singing voices
I do wonder if the hate she got would've been much less had the original performance not been so iconic though. I feel like that probably put it in the public eye much more.
