Why is everything so awkward?

Like when I say excuse me and pass people hiking, they always look at me like I'm nuts. Or I'll accidentally make eye contact with someone and say hi, and they again, look at me like I'm nuts.

I'm guessing I'm making the wrong facial expression?

Or am I misreading their facial expressions? Maybe that expression actually means something different?
