First time mom during Xmas — am I being paranoid?
So, my baby will be just about twelve weeks come Christmas. She’s had her first vaccines, but is too young for a flu or Covid vaccines. RSV, flu, and COVID numbers are high where I live, and paediatric hospitals are above capacity (from what I’ve heard, wait times are 12+ hours).
My parents are adamant that we attend Christmas. It would be ten people total, indoors. About half of those people have boosters and flu shots. My parents say they’ll mask up when the baby is there, but Covid is airborne, and I know that is tough to require masks in someone else’s house. My parents are also… not the best at following through and being truthful. It’s already come out that one person didn’t actually get their booster, and during previous visits my parents pull down their masks and forget to put them back on. I have to ask them to wash their hands before holding the baby—they never offer. And when they do wash their hands it’s for like ten seconds and they don’t dry them off (like what? Isn’t this a basic thing?).
So anyway, I’m getting a ton of pressure (you better be there! Everyone will be pissed if the baby isn’t there! Come for just an hour! We’ve already bought gifts!), and it’s been going on for the last two weeks. Honestly it’s kinda ruined things for me (not even excited anymore for my baby’s first Christmas, and every phone call with my parents is full of guilt trips) and I just want to say nope, not going.
But before I do that, I wanted to get some thoughts on whether I’m being too paranoid about germs and illness.
So, set me straight! Give me your opinions!
Signed an exhausted first time mom.
