Planning for the end of film school.

Hey everyone this might be a semi long post but it’s a question Iv been thinking a lot about.

To lay it down, I’m a currently a junior in film school studying in NYC. Ive tried most roles but am very set on cinematography as my path on what I want to do in life.

So here’s my situation, I don’t really have any connection within the industry like some of the students at my school, BUT I do have a decent chunk of cash from getting hit by a car a while back.

This puts me in a position where I will have about 15k to invest in cinematography and then have about 1 year of cash that I can live off of.

My current plan is to use that one year trying to get as many jobs as possible and to build myself up. I have a bunch of projects that Iv worked on and a website I’m building , I just never been paid yet (except for colorgrading)

This part could just be because I’m young and still have a distant goal, but I don’t want to end up only filling commercials for the rest of my life. I really want to DP features. I wouldn’t mind doing them along the way, but they are not the end goal.

MY QUESTION is, which way should I go about investing that 15k based off my goals? I’m currently thinking of buying a fully kitted URSA MINI 4.6 G2, and then use the rest of the money on lighting and stands. But I know a lot of the corporate world films with canon C300-500s or Sony fx/fs cameras, but am afraid of getting locked in that market. There is also the possibility of going with an arri Amira and just not having any supplemental gear for it.

What do you guys think?
