An issue of discourse - what motivates climate policy paralysis?
Hi Reddit. I am 28 M Italian.
For years I’ve been working in the field of climate on a volunteering/social enterprise level. Ever since the 2018 IPCC report I have been terrified about the consequences of climate inaction and the amazing work that social enterprises do often made me feel more frustrated as it seemed to go ignored by media and the public.
I have recently begun working with a professor at my local university to analyse discourse and (mainly) right-wing narratives and the way they contribute to policy paralysis (eg. Trump and the abandoning of the 2015 Paris accords). My research has to focus on NATURAL LANGUAGE (language that occurs naturally in a human community by a process of use, repetition, and change without conscious planning or premeditation) on social media (tweets, posts, youtube videos and especially the comments underneath them) to understand the main metaphors, narratives and stories behind popular climate inaction. However, I am not too familiar with the main actors in sustainability mis/disinformation in the US.
I have found a list of republican actors which have received funding from the oil industry (ATTACHED), but I would be immensely grateful if anyone had any online references they knew about - politicians, influencers, actors who propagate climate misinformation and comment sections which feed into it. Whether it is posts or just specific names
I hope this work can contribute towards positive change and I thank anyone that can nudge me in the right direction :)
