I'm begining to think strength training is underrated for woman climbers
I've been climbing on and off for a number of years, progressed quickly at first, then plateaued at a V3/V4 for several years. I'm often felt frustrated by my lack of progress, but when I've sought out advice for improving online, I often see people say strength isn't a limiting factor until higher levels. Instead, you should just climb more, which is what I did.
A few months back, I finally said fuck it, let me just try to get stronger and see how it goes. I'm not doing anything crazy, just lifting weights for about 20 minutes three times a week, but I feel like I'm finally seeing progress. I'm starting to regularly flash V4s and making good progress/topping the occasional V5s.
There's probably a little confirmation bias going on, and I certainly have some technique issues (which are actually getting easier to pin point now I feel less strained on the wall), but I'm a little annoyed it took me this long to do the obvious and try strength training. I also feel like the women who climb harder than me at the gym are almost always visibly muscular, which should have been a clue. I dunno, I kind of wonder if the places I was looking for advice were just male dominated as men usually have a higher baseline strength that would make this advice make more sense.
Obviously I chose not to strength train for a variety of reasons, but has anyone else experienced something like this after starting strength training?
