requirements to fight Gwyndolin?

do you really need to find a ring in the catacombs first? if so thats honestly kinda dumb because thats a large gap of time after she/he warns the player for their horrible deed in killing the goddess and the same large amount of time before being "punished" and its a little disappointing that the area loses light, i was expecting it to transform into a nightmare version of the former kingdom
