Accidental Fermentation?!

I had done a quick pickle of peppers back in Nov/Dec that I forgot to take out of the fridge. I pulled them out today, cracked the lid, and they started foaming like a freshly poured bottle of beer! What exactly happened here? I tossed them anyways cause this was never the plan, but Im curious what happened.
