Help with a plum sapling

Never planted anything before so this is my first time, kept the seed in the fridge for 4 months and after it rooted I planted it in this pot. My question is: I've heard online that you supposed to trim it after it grows to a certain length, but I have no idea when or how to properly do it, if I need to do it at all.
