Question for other Husky owners with similar experiences
I rescued my boy Rikki a little over a year ago. He turned 2 this year for reference.
When I first got him, I couldn’t even leave home alone for a second. He would destroy the house, and chew up all of my expensive collections of things (only the really expensive stuff… go figure). I was unable to crate train him, as the way he would claw and bite and freak out in a crate had me scared he was going to hurt himself. Also, he would poop in the crate and roll around in it which was the worst part. So that is why I decided against crate training.
Fast forward to where we are now. (a year after I adopted him) I leave him alone in the house when I leave to go to work, roughly from 9-5 give or take. He doesn’t destroy anything, and behaves himself when he is home now for the most part.
My big issue is that he poops ALL OVER my house, and then proceeds to step all over it, mash it into the carpets, and track it ALL THROUGH my entire house, almost on a daily basis.
The craziest part, is that some days he wont do it, and it might even be like 3-4 days in a row where he wont poop in the house. And then randomly, he will start doing it again, and it’s always worse than it ever was before.
It has gotten significantly better since I first got him, but it’s still so horrible. I am losing my mind cleaning poop mashed carpets every single day after coming home from work, and I’m not sure how much more I can take.
I have tried everything that my vet has recommended, I had put him on anxiety medication, tried the CBD calming treats, leaving music and or the TV on for him, making sure all the windows are open, leaving for small periods of time to try and build up his tolerance, you name it, I’ve tried it. I also make sure to take him on a 45 minute walk every morning before leaving for work every day.
Also, he will never act like this while I am home with him. He is the sweetest boy imaginable, and he never pees or poops in the house while I am home with him. He knows to do his business outside, and he knows how to notify me that he needs to go outside. Also, whenever I am cleaning up his messes in the house, I can tell by his demeanor that he is sorry & feels bad for doing that in the house.
Does anyone have any experience dealing with something similar to this, and if so, what were some things that helped?
For reference, I live alone, in a 1 bedroom townhouse. When he is left alone, he is pretty much confined to the living room & the kitchen only, as I will shut all of the doors to the other rooms in the house, so there isn’t a huge amount of space for him to get into things. Which is another reason I stopped trying to crate train, as there is almost no room in my place for a crate the size that he requires.
