Looking for a shallow depth A/C[Cross Post from ConsumerAdvice]
Living in NYC with a fire escape on both windows in my room. Law states that I can't have an A/C unit that extrudes too much* to block the path of the fire escape in one Window. My room is around 190 square feet. I've tried to find small depth A/C's. I've also looked into models that evenly distribute their depth internally vs externally(Example) That youtube video claims it's an old Carrier 6000BTU unit.
I've tracked down a few shallow units, but none of them are more powerful than 5000BTU, and they're quite old. Is this considered an outdated design? I know the further back it is, the quieter it operates, but are there any other drawbacks? Anyway, here are some A/C's that have an acceptable external depth:
- I like this design as it keeps the exhaust as close to the window as possible. Probably less than 8 inches in external depth.
Frigidaire: http://www.frigidaire.com/Home-Comfort/Air-Conditioning/Window-Mounted-AC/FFRA0522Q1/
- Probably less than 10" of external depth
- The spec lists it's depth as 14 3/8, but if you look at the picture, the majority of that is internal. I LOVE this type of design. Even though it's noisier, it's really easy to install, and easily fits the requirement(That's probably less than 7 inches of external depth!)
So I've listed three A/C's. Why am I making this post? These models are old. 5000 BTU's might not be enough for a 200 square foot room. Are there any models out there with similar design(or shallow external depth) that are at least 6000BTU. Or maybe even newer?
Thank you for reading.
TL;DR: Looking for a 6000BTU+ unit with shallow external depth
I've also looked into portable A/C's, but I would prefer to find a window A/C solution if possible.
*Not exactly sure on what's the limit. Hard to track down.
